Invitation

THE MUNICIPALITY OF DOBRICH is pleased to invite all professionals, with a positive approach towards and interest in urban planning and design, to participate in an open and anonymous competition.

Our desire is to challenge participants to put their ideas on paper, to unleash their imagination and to present their concept for the renovation and development of the central part of Dobrich.

International competition

The Contracting Authority will conduct an international competition in strict compliance with all rules and established best practices

Openness

participation is open to anyone interested in participating, without restrictions and/or discrimination

Anonymity

a guarantee that the judges will not have access to names and authors, but will judge only the competition projects

Impartiality

fair competition of ideas and concepts, with the objective of the Contracting Authority being to obtain the best solution for the central pedestrian zone and a project to be implemented at a later stage

Zone A

concept for the development, improvement and design of the central city section of Dobrich. The scope includes 25 Septemvri Blvd. (from 3rd March Blvd. to Dobrudzha Blvd.), Dimitar Petkov Str. (from Doyran Str. to Svoboda Sq.), Svoboda Sq., Nezavisimost Str. (up to Lyuben Karavelov Str.), Tsar Boris III Sq., Bulgaria Str., Demokratsia Sq., Maxim Gorky Str. (up to St. Cyril and Methodius Str.), Vazrazhdane Sq.

Zone B

The competition seeks to obtain a comprehensive and sustainable concept for rethinking of the central city section of Dobrich within the scope of Zone A (described in detail above), and, for the scope of Zone B - a conceptual design.

AWARDS

The Contracting Authority has determined the following prizes and payments to competition participants

Part of the prize is the possibility of commissioning elaboration of the TECHNICAL and DETAILED INVESTMENT DESIGN and implementation of author's supervision.

Conditions

The competition is open, without limitation, to all Bulgarian and foreign persons or their associations.

There are no requirements for the economic and financial situation of the participants.

Jury

The competition projects will be judged
by a nine-member international jury.

dr. Falma Fshazi

Dr. Falma Fshazi is a Senior Researcher associated at the Centre André Chastel of Sorbonne University in Paris. She has been member and program lead at the Chair of Architecture and Urban Transformation/Persyn Chair in ETH Zurich. PhD in History and Civilizations from Ecole des Hautes Études en Sociales Paris. Fshazi in her position of Director of the Center for Openness and Dialogue in Tirana has been coordinating the social and institutional dialogue around the design of SKSQ in Tirana.

arch. Georgi Bachev

Founder of Arhis Studio in Varna. Worked on numerous projects in the field of urban planning, residential and public buildings.

prof. dr.arch.Nora Lombardini

Associate professor in Architectural Restoration at Department of Architecture, Built environment, Contruction engineering (dABC), Politecnico di Milano. Her research activity is on the following topics: study on history and theory of restoration; studies on the conservation of historic centres. She has international experience in organizing students’ practical work in Italy, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Azerbaijan, China. In Bulgaria, she is referent for Erasmus exchange students for Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" (Varna) and University of Architecture, Civil Eng. and Geodesy (Sofia).

dipl. ing. arch. Alexander Kneer

Studied architecture at the TU Munich and the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Chicago as a scholar of the German National Merit Foundation, with a main focus on urban design and urban development strategies. He worked for SOM in Chicago and Auer & Weber Architekten in Munich before living for several years in China and the Emirates, involved in mostly large-scale urban development projects. He was a founder of Token, a cross-disciplinary design practice, which won the Europan 10 in Munich. Following an Urban Design Master at the ETH Zurich he joined Hosoya Schaefer Architects in 2012. He has been a project lead in successful urban design competitions such as the Tech Cluster Zug and the Wilhelmsburg Elbinselquartier masterplan and became a partner in 2019

аrch. Ljubo Georgiev

Graduated architecture at IUAV in Venice (Italy) and TU Delft (the Netherlands). Between 2017 and the end of 2021 he was the director of Sofiaplan - Sofia’s municipal strategic and spatial planning body. He led the team, which coordinated and co-created the long term development plan for Sofia, Vision Sofia 2050. Since the beginning of 2022 he is head of the Urban policies association in Sofia.

Founder of OUTLINE ARCHITECTS architecture and design studio. Since 2019 he is the chairman of the Union of Architects in Bulgaria - Stara Zagora Society.

Among his distinctive projects are "Beautification and improvement of the physical environment of the pedestrian zone and square space around the Municipality in Stara Zagora, awarded in the international competition of BIGSEE AWARDS.
